Study Member Advisory Panel

The Study Member Advisory Panel will be a small group of study members who help us make future decisions about NCDS

The deadline for applying to join the Panel has now passed. Thank you to everyone who applied – we were delighted to receive so many applications. You can expect to hear back from us on your applications by the end of July.

We think NCDS will be a better, more successful study with your input!

Who will be a part of the Panel?

We aim to appoint study members from a range of different backgrounds, who together will bring a mix of perspectives to Panel discussions.

Panel members don’t need any specific education, professional experience or formal qualifications to join.

What types of things will the Panel be asked to comment on?

We’re planning to get the Panel’s input on a variety of different things. This might include:

  • what questions we ask
  • the information and materials we send you
  • how we can make it as easy (and fun!) as possible for you to take part in our surveys
  • different ways of collecting information from you
  • what you would like to know about the study and findings
  • how your information is used for research.

How often will the Panel meet?

There will be two Panel meetings per year:

  • a 2-hour online meeting
  • a full-day in-person meeting in London (expenses paid).

Are Panellists paid?

Yes, Panellists will be paid for time spent preparing for and attending Panel meetings. We will also cover reasonable expenses.

How long are Panellists appointed?

Panellists will be appointed for a two-year term. We don’t plan to extend the term beyond this or ask study members to serve two consecutive terms. This is because we’re keen for other study members to have the opportunity to join the Panel in future.

Panellists can resign from the Panel during their two-year term if they change their mind or are no longer able to take part.

How will Panellists be selected?
The NCDS team will read the applications we’ve received and your answer to why you’d like to be a part of the Panel. They will choose a group that will bring a range of different perspectives and walks of life. We hope to have a balance of men and women, and of people living in different parts of Great Britain.

When can I expect to hear back on my application?
You can expect to hear from us about your application by the end of July.

If I’m not selected this time, can I apply again in future?
If you’re not selected this time, we’ll hold your application on file, so that we can come back to you in the future when we’re looking for new panellists.
