Age 42 Survey

The Age 42 survey took place in 2000. This was the first survey that was conducted with a computer. Over 11,000 of you took part.

What we asked

when-you-were-42-politics

You completed an interview which asked you about who you lived with, where you lived, relationships, children, family life, employment and other activities, qualifications and training, health, smoking, drinking, use of illegal drugs, diet, exercise, values and attitudes, and leisure activities.

When you were 42…

  • 7 in 10 of you were married and a further 1 in 10 had a cohabiting partner.
  • Amongst those who lived with a partner, just under 7 in 10 said you pooled all your money together, 2 in 10 said you pooled some of your money and kept some separate and 1 in 10 said you each kept your money separate.
  • A third of those with a job said that you would have preferred to work fewer hours, just over half said that your jobs interfered with family life and over half said your jobs demanded a lot of you mentally and emotionally.
  • Just under 7 in 10 had a computer at home. A quarter of those with a home computer used it every day.
  • Just over three quarters said you had voted in the 1997 election when Tony Blair became Prime Minister. Over half of voters had voted for Labour.
  • 3 in 10 said you had smoked cannabis at some point, but less than 1 in 10 had done so in the last 12 months.
